Educational Qualifications

Information Regarding Schools of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine

There are over 50 school for acupuncture and Oriental medicine training in the United States. These programs train people in any or all of the following modalities: acupuncture, herbal medicine, and/or Asian bodywork therapy.

Not all schools are accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM). Attending an accredited institution is important because it allows students to receive national certification through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) upon successful completion of the national board exams. Many states require national certification in order to apply for a license to practice in that state, however laws for licensure and scope of practice vary from state to state.

There are several different certifications through the NCCAOM. These include a Diplomat in Acupuncture (Dipl. Ac.), Diplomat in Chinese Herbology (Dipl. C.H.), Diplomat in Oriental Medicine (Dipl. O.M.) which includes both acupuncture and Chinese herbology, and a Diplomat in Asian Bodywork Therapy (Dipl. A.B.T.).
